Homelessness is the condition of people without a regular dwelling. People who are homeless are most often unable to acquire and maintain regular, safe, secure, and adequate housing, or lack "fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence." The legal definition of homeless are different for each country. The definition also could be different among jurisdictions in the same country or region. The term homeless may also include people whose primary night-time residence is in a homeless shelter, a warming center, a domestic violence shelter, a vehicle (including recreational vehicles and campers), squatting, cardboard boxes, a tent, tarpaulins, or other ad hoc housing situations. From Malaysian government website states that homeless are people that does not have any permanent job or home or does not have any fixed job or home, for someone with intellectual.  There are a number of organizations who provide provisions for the homeless in Malaysia such as KASEH4U and PERTIWI.

An estimated 2,500 people in Kuala Lumpur were homeless in 2010. The population of this group had decrease in the following years as reported by online Utusan Newspaper.

Most countries provide a variety of services to assist homeless people. They often provide food, shelter and clothing and may be organized and run by community organizations (often with the help of volunteers) or by government departments. These programs may be supported by government, charities, religion organizations and individual or group donors. Many cities also have street newspapers, which are publications designed to provide employment opportunity to homeless people. While some homeless have jobs, some must seek other methods to make a living. Begging or panhandling is one option, but is becoming increasingly illegal in many cities.

The organization that we choose to involve in helping these homeless is PERTIWI Soup Kitchen. This organization was established to provide regular meals at various locations around Kuala Lumpur on a regular basis. This community outreach effort is established and managed by Pertubuhan Tindakan Wanita Islam (PERTIWI), one of Malaysia’s longest running NGOs, with the support of corporate and individual sponsors.

Soup kitchens provide an important way to give back to the community by offering a healthy meal to those who are in need. The few soup kitchens that do operate in Kuala Lumpur are already providing this critical service but there are still too many hard-core poor and homeless people in our city who are unable to eat on a daily basis.

PERTIWI Soup Kitchen provides a humanitarian food-aid service to the homeless and hard-core poor irrespective of race or religion. By interacting with various destitute inner-city communities on a regular basis, additional support has been given to assist those who are ready to become more independent. Our medical service helps those who seek basic treatment for common ailments.

Thank You PERTIWI for aaccepting us! We love you!
