This subject teaches us to appreciate life and cherish all the little things that we might have missed before we lost it forever. A Wake Up Call

The experiences and knowledge I have gained throughout our visit to the places around Kuala Lumpur at night was truly eye opening. Though surrounded by technologies and accommodations there are still some people that are in need of a place to stay and some food to eat. The Pertiwi Soup Kitchen have helped not only by distributing free foods but they also have a ‘portable clinic’ that can attend to the people’s health. Most importantly, these people are not all homeless, some just needed help because they can’t seem to get enough food on the plate for their family.

Benefits of vounteering

 Through this activity, I know that there are a lot of disabled people in the world. They might lost hope in 

their future, unable to support their family due to some problems, lack of confidence standing out of this 

society and more. These helpless people should be concerned by the society. As a university student, a 

youth leader in future, we should join this kind of volunteer work and contribute more to society. University 

students are not a standard higher than those homeless people. We should break the gap between poor and 

rich. This is what I learnt from this society work.

Not Just An Experience

        Volunteering is not something new to me as I have been a volunteer quite a few times before. All the volunteer jobs that I have taken part before share the same traits, which is to ensure the success of an event. Previous volunteer jobs did give me wonderful experiences, but, Social Engagement gave me something more. It made me realise that how fortunate and blessed am I to have a home, to never worry when my next meal will be and have the ability to make a differences in others life, even just a small, insignificant changes. Furthermore, PERTIWI Soup Kitchen also taught me something new. Sometimes you have to be strict and kind simultaneously. The people are strictly requested to follow the rules. Anyone who disobey the rules will not be entertained. All these rules serve to ease the flow of distributing the flow and it has proven to be successful! There is not a single person who did not get the food and the flow is very smooth as well as efficient.

Introducing myself to the visitors and talking to them personally really changed my outlook on life and in people, in general. I learnt about the backgrounds of weekly visitors and found out that some were former teachers, engineers, psychologists, and veterans. I was shocked! I couldn't believe how educated these people were and I couldn't fathom the thought that they had to resort to soup kitchens to sustain themselves.
The soup kitchen tore down any biased opinion I had first carried in, since my thoughts were always influenced by my family, my peers, and society. These people were not crazy or lazy, as I have heard them been labelled. I learnt in such unfortunate turns of life, they marched into the wrong direction and all they needed was a helping hand to guide them back on track; and, for the meantime, the soup kitchen would suffice. Speaking to the visitors really changed my life. They've voiced how difficult it was to survive financially, especially because of the bad economic state that our nation is in, but in addition to that, they struggled because of the preconceived notions of laziness people carried about them, just like I once had. It would put them down and make them feel inferior and, as a result, I felt really dumb for having even had the slightest biased thought. Meanwhile, here we are as students, taking what we have for granted; eating all we can because we have the money to spend, and wasting all we don’t finish because it has no immediate effect on us. It made me ashamed of my own habits and made me more self-conscious about wasting my resources.

Learn to Appreciate

This is the first time i involve in such activity. This activity is actually giving me a new experience and perception towards the life of Malaysian. That is really a huge number of homeless people struggling in this city. Luckily, there is also quite a large number of volunteers are willing to sacrifice their time and money to help these peoples. I am amazed of the way Pertiwi Soup Kitchen handling and controlling the crowd of around 600 peoples every time. The way they distribute food and drinks and the way they give order and communicate are very organised and clear and these are what should we, as university students should learn. Besides, I had experienced to communicate with different people. Some people are really great, they appreciate what we had done and and actually thank us sincerely. I felt so happy and satisfied when heard it. While some are really bad temper and they will just blaming and even scolded us. Therefore, I really experience and learn to communicate with different kinds of people. Lastly, the most important lessons i learnt, is to appreciate what we have todays. Since there are so many people who cannot even afford a meal. So, I appreciate what I have today and never give up whenever facing problems. Life will still goes on.

An Experience That Will Foreverly Change Your View of Life!

I used to hear this type of program in TV, newspaper and etc. It never
occurred to me to try it out at the first place but I was given the
chance to join before the Social Engagement. A bit of excitement
before I joined and truthfully, it was fantastic and eye-opening after
I met all the homeless there for the first time. Heartwarming too. I
used the subject as a base for me to do more of this activity and I
was really glad that my group mates agreed to it. I even happier when
they feel the same way as I felt after joining the engagement. This is
not going to be my last time, a student life could be very hectic
sometimes especially engineering student but whenever I have time and
enough resource in the future, I will join this again. Life is
worthless if you do not care enough to give back to society.

Social engagement is something that you are sincerely doing it, if not there will be no fun and benefit that you can get. For me, I had a wonderful moment with all of my teammates here despite a lot of trouble that we were facing but we still managed to complete the task given. From this activity which was distributing food and drink to homeless, I could saw many people who were more unfortunate than me and it made me felt grateful because I did not had to stood in line for every single night to fill in my stomach. In fact, I also felt that by distributing food to them, I could saw their feeling, how they enjoyed with us, shared some stories and entertained children overthere. In conclusion, it was a great opportunity for me because a lot of experiences can I get from this activity. Furthermore, it help me in order to realize that I need to be grateful on what I have right now if compared to those kind of people. 

See You Again

Again, thanks to Pertiwi Soup Kitchen for giving us chance to learn new experiences. Thanks for teaching and  guiding us whenever we are wrong. Probably this is the last time for all of us to spend our time together. But don't worry, we will try to help whenever we are free and when in need.

So, we successfully completed our social engagement project. Thanks to Dr. Shamiri who sacrifice his time to pay us a visit. Luckily we are able to take a photo with you before we start our job.

A Night Full of Adventures

Last Wednesday was full of mishaps. Not only was it a hot night, but we also experienced some difficulties in getting ourselves to the tune  hotel in Tuanku Abdul Rahman street (jalan TAR).

We started our journey at 7.45 from the bus stop in front of 1st residential college. But some of us were late so we ended up missing the bus. Since the next bus is in another 30 minutes, we've decided to walk instead. It took us around 15 minutes to get to the train station and by then we were already sweating.

After purchasing our tokens, we boarded the train to get to the location. However, we disembarked at the wrong station and we're still at least 6 stops away from our destination. Not only that, but the train was down meaning that there are no train services throughout the night. Well to be honest I had suggested that we just give up return to University of Malaya (UM) but the our strong willed and positive minded group leader had suggested that we took a can instead. Thus begin our RM18.50 journey to the Tune Hotel. To our surprise, we managed to get there before the pertiwi soup kitchen's food truck arrived which was a relief,

Well it was just like any other night. We distributed the foods respectively according to the stations assigned by  the organiser. But by the end of the food distribution process, a fight broke out between the people lining up. It might be the heat getting to them but the pertiwi soup kitchen's volunteers was quick to resolve the fight before it gets too serious.

Second Mission

4/5/2015 , on this day,it's still holiday but we keep on doing what we love by giving food to the homeless with Pertiwi Soup Kitchen once more !!

This time basically we already know what to do since this was our second experience there,we do it as usual but unexpectedly there were so many people until we did not have enough limbs to do so but there were nothing that could stop us from doing what we loved to.

 Still eager to help as long as we could

Although we were very tired despite we got a lot of examinations and assignments,we said to ourselves that this was what social engagement meant,no matter where and how busy we are,as long we can help those homeless people,we will do it until the end.We ended our mission that night around 11.30 p.m.

Final word from me (Azfar Nazmi) : There is nothing we cannot do if we could only see but can not help either.

Learn to Appreciate

When we are using smartphone,

someone might still using normal handphone.

When we are complaining the food are not nice,someone need line up for a meal.

When we are sleeping on bed,someone might need to sleep along the corridor.

Watching those kids and adults for these two days, I need to learn how to appreciate.

First Mission

3/5/2015 It is holiday, everyone is going home, but guess what were we doing?
We are giving food to the homeless with Pertiwi Soup Kitchen !!

Unluckily, it was raining cats and dogs. However we are not giving up our missions .
We were waiting for the Pertiwi Soup Kitchen to arrive as the traffic are extremely jam.
And our team leader, Syukri was totally wet during the journey to there.

We are looking for the rain to stop 

When the Pertiwi Soup Kitchen arrive, they distribute jobs to all the volunteers including us systematically and quickly. After that, we start giving food to the peoples in a long queue.
We actually had gone to 3 different places around the areas with the cars and vans .
All the food were finished around 1130pm.

We also met with another 2 groups of volunteers from University of Malaya, which are from Mechanical Engineering and Diploma. After finish our jobs we managed to take a photo as long as a selfie together.

Total Cream Rolls here are 560 rolls so that's mean you just share a happiness with 560 homeless. That really is a huge number.

Last but not least, we are now one step closer to our engagement and the first day of our engagement is tomorrow! Pray for us guys. 🙏

Getting Sponsorship: Where to start first?!

Happy Saturday everyone!
It's weekend, Let's get proactive and exercise!! Just kidding..I don't exercise! Haha :P

As anyone who had read our earlier post, know that we already finished our presentation to introduce our engagement. Now it's time to find sponsor for it! But where to start??

As we keep on searching and searching and searching for our potential sponsor. Our group member, Lim Kuan Ming, found a potential one, from our own University, an organization called UMCares.

As Dr. Serina Rahman, one of UMCares staff also one of the presenter of the day said and I rephrase it, "As an engineer, It's no use when you built something for the communities but they doesn't know how and doesn't have the need to use it, instead, go to the communities yourself and ask them what they need and then you build it for them.
